What is an Insurance Endorsement?
An insurance policy is an agreement between you and your insurance company. The agreement simply states that your insurance company agrees to provide coverage in exchange for payment of the premium and compliance with the provisions of the policy. Before you can find the right kind of insurance to protect you and your vehicle and file a claim for coverage, you must first understand the language of your insurance policy. Since liability insurance is complicated and different companies offer slightly or radically different policies, it is important to understand how the language and basic concepts pertain to your specific policy. The scope of protection provided by an insurance policy is called coverage. The policy spells out many agreements, but perhaps most important, it specifies the type of losses for which the insured will be in reimbursed by the insurance company. When the policy states that the insurance company will pay for a certain type of loss, then it is common to say that the insured person has coverage for that loss.
What is a Declarations Page?
The policy and the endorsements spell out the details of all insurance coverages offered by the insurance company. The declarations page spells out exactly which of those coverages you have and at what limits. The declarations page will vary in content somewhat by state. However, in general this is usually the document that makes up your detailed bill from the insurance company. The declarations page will usually contain your name, a description of each vehicle covered, the types of coverages that apply to each vehicle covered, the limits of each coverage, amounts of deductibles and perhaps a list of endorsements and discounts or surcharges applied.
What is an Endorsement?
In addition to the comprehensive policy document, you will also usually receive a set of additional documents called “endorsements.” You see, often an insurance company will produce a primary policy that they give to insureds in many states, even though the coverages may have differences in different states. To cover these differences, they also provide “endorsements” which either add conditions and provisions to the main policy, take away conditions and provisions from the main policy or make changes to the conditions and provisions of the main policy. For example, suppose that you are given a main policy that indicates that you must report a claim within 90 days to be able to collect a certain part of your coverage. But, in your state, the law does not allow such a 90-day time limit; the limit must be at least 120 days. Then you would receive an endorsement that provides that the policy for residents of your state is modified so that you must report a claim within 120 days, rather than the 90 days stated in the main policy. Furthermore, although the main policy might not be updated by the insurance company for several years, you might receive additional endorsements every time you pay a new premium. So, before you assume that the information in your main policy is applicable, make certain by checking for endorsements that could apply to your policy.
