An 11-year-old girl was struck by a City of Miami Fire Rescue vehicle Friday morning while crossing the street near SLAM! Miami Charter School, officials confirmed.
The crash occurred just before 8 a.m. as the rescue truck was transporting a patient to Jackson Memorial Hospital. According to Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez, the truck was traveling south in the northbound lanes with its lights and sirens activated—an emergency maneuver permitted when authorized.
Sanchez said the child “unexpectedly stepped out between standstill traffic,” prompting the driver to swerve in an attempt to avoid her. Despite the effort, the truck hit the girl. Crews immediately stopped and provided medical assistance at the scene before another rescue unit transported her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Her current condition has not been released.
The patient originally being transported was safely transferred to a separate rescue vehicle and continued to the hospital without delay, Sanchez added.
Reporters at the scene later observed a pair of sneakers in the roadway near where the truck came to a stop. No crossing guards were present at the time, as the first school bell had already rung. Witnesses indicated the girl appeared to be crossing several feet away from the marked crosswalk.
In a statement, SLAM! Miami expressed concern for the student and her family, saying the school is in contact with them and providing support.
