This weekend is the unofficial start of the summer, but many traditional Memorial Day activities will be put on hold this year. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the military personnel who had died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday is now observed on the last Monday of May, having been observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May. The holiday is always a 3 day weekend consisting of Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. In 2020, the Memorial Day weekend extends from 6 p.m. Friday, May 22, to 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 25. The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that 366 people may die on U.S. roads this Memorial Day holiday
period. Holidays traditionally are a time of travel for families across the United States. After weeks of staying at home, many people are dreaming of a Memorial Day barbecue, or some fun in the sun. But doctors say it’s important to make good decisions. Either way, Memorial Day 2020 is going to be a little different this year in Miami. For starters, there are no concerts or parties. Bars are closed. In fact, you can’t even go to the beach because although retail stores and restaurants are now open,
beaches are still closed for the holiday, and reopening dates are still uncertain. Even the beachfront South Pointe Park, where you can walk as long as you’re wearing a mask, is only open Monday through Friday. Celebrating this Memorial Day during a pandemic is something new for most of us. Get creative and resourceful, and remember the meaning behind the day.
Here’s a list of do’s and don’ts for enjoying Memorial day during the coronavirus
outbreak:
Do go for a walk. Lace up your walking shoes, grab the dog and head out for a nice long walk.
Don’t host a party. This is not the time for a backyard barbecue. This isn’t even the time to invite the neighbors over.
Do enjoy the outdoors. Staying physically active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy. In many areas, people can visit parks, trails, and open spaces as a way to relieve stress, get some fresh air and vitamin D, stay active, and safely connect with others. Some state and national parks are open, but you know what’s always open? Your backyard. So set up camp back there, break out the SkyView app to look at constellations.
Do avoid large crowds. Depending on where you live, the beach or lake may be open to you. But you must remember that, just because it’s open, doesn’t mean it’s the right decision.
Do order takeout. Definitely order takeout. Like some great barbecue from the place around the corner, doughnuts from the locally owned bakery or ice cream from your favorite place. Support your local economy and small businesses while you do it.
Do wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, several times a day. Use soap and water or a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol before cooking or eating, after using the bathroom, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
Don’t touch your eyes, nose, and mouth. If you have somehow come into contact with the virus, touching your face can help it enter your body.
Do learn the symptoms, which are similar to flu and may not emerge until 14 days after exposure: fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath among others.
Do consider taking extra precautions and staying out of public places if you’re over 60 years old, or have a condition, as you have a higher risk of developing the disease. Note that as of now, the highest-risk groups appear to be seniors and people with preexisting conditions like chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.
