According to new data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors is recalling 14,620 trucks and SUVs due to a brake failure that causes the brakes in some of their vehicles to become difficult to use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration office began investigating the issues with the brake system in 2018 after receiving 111 consumer complaints from drivers. Apparently, GM is aware of about 113 car accidents and 13 injuries due to the issue. The recall is part of a much larger recall of nearly 4 million vehicles earlier this year. The recall addresses a defect with the power-brake assist system in the vehicle. The defect significantly reduces the amount of effort a driver must exert to stop the vehicle. If the system fails, he or she may find that the brake pedal takes much more effort to push. Drivers may also find that it takes more distance for their vehicle to stop, which could lead to an accident. Apparently, the issue is more likely to occur when traveling at lower speeds. According to General Motors, owners of the vehicles under recall may notice other issues with their vehicles such as a vibrating brake pedal, a change in the amount of pressure needed to depress the brake pedal, or a consistent ticking noise coming from the engine compartment.
The recall is applicable to the following 2018 model year vehicles equipped with a 5.3L or 6.2L V8 Engine:
- Cadillac Escalade
- Chevrolet Tahoe
- GMC Yukon
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- GMC Yukon 1500
How Should I Deal With Vehicle Repairs After an Accident? For those involved in an automobile accident, there is a good chance that the vehicle(s) involved in that accident sustained damage. The same automobile insurance that covers your personal injuries should also cover the damages to your vehicle. Remember, however, to maintain precise documentation regarding any necessary automobile repairs. The severity of a vehicle’s damages will likely be a significant factor in determining whether the insurance company will pay for the automobile repairs. Generally, the insurance company will repair, replace, or reimburse a person for a vehicle’s fair market value. The fair market value is the amount a particular car would have sold for on the day it was involved in the accident. If the cost to repair an automobile exceeds the fair market value of a vehicle, the vehicle will likely be deemed a total loss. As a result, an insurance company will likely replace a vehicle or reimburse the owner of the automobile for its fair market value on the day of the accident. Individuals, however, should never feel obligated to accept the fair market value that is quoted by an insurance company. An insured driver has every right to participate in the valuation process of a vehicle. Accident victims should confirm the accuracy of an insurance company’s fair market value quote by comparing that quote with consumer report websites, Blue Book prices, and local newspapers. Consumers should also keep in mind that although the insurance company will pay for the automobile repairs determined to be economically practicable, an individual has the right to choose what company repairs his or her vehicle. Accident victims should ask family or friends to recommend trustworthy repair shops that will repair a vehicle properly. Individuals, however, should always be cautious about accepting insurance company recommendations for automobile repair shops because those businesses may not always be acting in the consumer’s best interests.
