A 21-year-old mom is accused of driving under the influence and leaving her baby trapped inside a crashed Jeep, Florida law enforcement said.
She’s charged with driving under the influence with damage to property or a person, and aggravated child abuse and neglect, according to the Clermont Police Department.
McClatchy News is not identifying the woman to protect the identity of her child. Her attorney information is not available in Lake County court records.
The black Jeep was lying on the passenger side, and officers began working to remove the baby from the vehicle, police said.
The woman identified herself as the driver and added that she was sober, but the officer said he didn’t ask if she was sober, according to the report.
She told police the crash happened as she was making a U-turn, then she veered off the road and flipped the car, police said.
A witness told investigators the mom got out of the crashed vehicle through the driver’s side and said, “Don’t call 911, help me get my baby, he’s in the car,” police said.
The witness then said the woman called her dad a couple of minutes later, stepped away and sat down until first responders arrived. The witness heard the baby crying in the car and tried to flag down someone else to help, she told police.
She declined to perform field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample, according to the report.
The mom told investigators that she and her child didn’t have a place to stay, police said. The boy was taken to a hospital and turned over to the care of a family friend, police said.
