3 Seriously Injured After Multi-Car Accident on Don Shula Expressway
An elderly woman is in critical condition after being extracted from her vehicle after a multi-car accident on the Don Shula Expressway in MiamiDade. The woman was placed on a stretcher and was rushed to the hospital along with two others. The accident occurred around 6pm on Monday on the Don Shula Expressway near Killian Parkway on ramp. The accident caused delays as the authorities had to shut down multiple lanes including the off-ramp onto Kendall Drive for several hours. The lanes have since reopened. The woman who was pinned inside her vehicle is in Kendall Regional Medical Center on trauma alert and the other two victims are recovering as they only suffered minor injuries.
What are Some of The Factors that Contribute to Off-Ramp and On-Ramp Accidents on Expressways?
Expressways allow traffic in South Florida to run smoothly. Exit ramps and entry ramps allow for drivers to access expressways and highways and also serve as transitions from freeways to secondary crossroads which could be freeways, major or minor arterials, or city streets. Any driver who spends a lot of time driving on expressways and highways knows that it is especially important to pay close attention when approaching an off-ramp or on-ramp. A driver’s failure to stay focused on their surroundings often can lead to accidents. You may be wondering what factors cause on-ramp and off-ramp accidents on expressways in Florida. The danger to drivers at on and off ramp merge points comes mainly from poor driver behavior and ramp design. Today, most drivers tend to speed when exiting or entering ramps while others can be inconsiderate when merging in and out with other drivers. This post aims to point out the potential crash risks across different types of expressway ramps (before on-ramps, between ramps, and after offramps) and assess some of the risks that can lead to accidents on expressways and highways in Florida. It also concludes that due to our grand dependence on and off ramps, we should consider safer and more efficient designs on existing highways and their related infrastructure in order to improve safety for drivers.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, common causes include poor design of expressway ramps and drivers who tend to either drive too slow or too fast when approaching ramps. Additionally, the FHA says that vehicles exiting a ramp are most likely to be involved in a run-off-road type accident while vehicles entering a ramp are most likely be involved in a rearend or sideswipe type of accident. Due to the fact that highway ramps are usually high above the ground and curved, drivers who enter ramps at high speed can easily lose control of their vehicle and cause an accident. In many instances, these accidents will lead to roll overs or collisions with barrier walls. These types of accidents typically result in very serious injuries or even death. Additionally, some drivers undertake dangerous maneuvers to narrowly enter or exit on-ramps and off-ramps. This is especially dangerous because it endangers not only the drivers engaged in this behavior but also the drivers in other lanes that may not be paying close attention. Overall, due to complex traffic patterns and constantly moving vehicles, on-ramps and off-ramp car accidents can be especially dangerous. Also, these types of accidents tend to happen rather quickly which means that few people witness the accidents and even when they do are unlikely to stop and offer assistance. We urge readers to use caution when travelling on ramps and merging onto and off of Florida’s expressways and highways. For those interested, the Florida Driver’s Handbook addresses Entering & Leaving Expressways and highways. How an Attorney Can Help After an On-Ramp or Off-Ramp Accident in Florida?
One of the biggest causes of on-ramp and off-ramp accidents is that they involve merging onto other roads in very fast-moving traffic. Traffic can slow considerably on off-ramps, which can lead to rear-end accidents, while merging onto busy interstates from on-ramps can be equally as dangerous.
