Florida Car Insurance Requirements
Even when drivers take all necessary precautions, they still face significant threats, while driving, especially in high traffic areas. There are several factors that can lead to car accidents. Some of the most common types of car accidents are caused by aggressive driving, distracted driving, driving under the influence, bad weather, poor road conditions, etc. In this blog post, we will go over the two types of insurance coverage all Floridians are required to obtain before they are allowed to register their vehicle in the state. It is important to understand the different types of insurance coverage that are required and the additional coverages that are available to you because you want to make sure you and your family are adequately protected in the event you or someone you love is involved in a car accident. Overall, if you can afford it, you should get the possible coverage available.
PIP and Property Damage Liability Coverage in Florida
Generally, there are five types of car insurance coverage available to Floridians. Within those five types of coverages, there are two types of coverage that drivers in Florida are required to purchase. It doesn’t matter if you’re a safe driver or if you’ve never been involved in an accident, this requirement applies to all drivers in Florida. The first is personal injury protection or “PIP” and the second mandatory coverage type is property damage liability coverage Below we explain the two types of mandatory coverages in more detail:
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Many car accident victims must undergo testing or treatment or receive medical care in the form of hospital stays or visits. Depending on the type and severity of the injury sustained, some car accident victims must attend physical therapy sessions. Personal Injury Protection or PIP is meant to pay for medical bills related to injuries sustained in car accidents. Specifically, PIP covers 80% percent of all necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000.00 resulting from a covered injury, no matter who caused the crash.
Property Damage Liability (PDL)
Property Damage Liability or (“PDL”) pays for damage to another person’s property caused by you or someone else driving your vehicle. In Florida, drivers must provide proof of PDL coverage as part of a policy issued by a Florida licensed insurer. Alternatively, drivers can obtain a self-insurance certificate issued by FLHSMV. Overall, any driver who wishes to register their vehicle in the state of Florida must be insured with PDL at the time of vehicle registration. Additionally, drivers must make sure to always maintain the required insurance coverages throughout the entire registration period.
