Mother Arrested for After Leaving Her Child in Hot Car Outside Fort Lauderdale BJ’s

A woman from Lauderhill, Florida has been arrested for leaving her 21- month-old daughter in a hot car for hours while she went shopping at BJ’s. The incident happened at the BJ’s Wholesale located at 5100 NW 9th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale earlier this week on Tuesday. According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department police, the woman spent three hours shopping at BJ’s while her daughter was strapped into a car seat in the back with the windows up and the car off. As soon as she exited the store and started putting her groceries in the trunk, the woman realized the child was passed out in the back seat and flagged down a store employee to call 911. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and measured the child’s temperature at 105 degrees, then rushed her to the hospital where her condition significantly improved. The child had a temperature of 105 degrees, was suffering from seizures. The woman told detectives that she forgot her daughter was in the backseat. However, they reviewed surveillance video, which showed the woman manually checking the locks on all the doors with her child still inside the car before entering the store. As a result, the woman got charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and is being held on $10,000 bond. The judge ordered her not to have any contact with her daughter once she is released from jail.

Preventing Hot Car Deaths in Florida

Florida is really hot. As a result, Florida is a hotspot for hot car deaths and consistently leads the way in the number of hot car deaths that occur in this country. Unlike most other places in the United States, it never really gets cold in the Sunshine State and even in the winter months, the average daytime temperatures hover in the 70s. However, we are now approaching the warmest months of the year when temperatures will reach well into the 90s, heightening the risks of a fatality if a child is left in a hot car.

Important Facts About Hot Cars in Florida:

• Heat stroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths in children under 15 in the U.S.

• Heat stroke can happen when the body is not able to cool itself quickly enough.

• A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s does.

• When left in a hot car, a child’s major organs begin to shut down when his temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit (F).

• A child can die when his temperature reaches 107 degrees F.

• Cars heat up quickly! In just 10 minutes, a car can heat up 20 degrees F.

• Cracking a window and/or air conditioning does little to keep it cool once the car is turned off.

• Heat stroke can happen when the outside temperature is as low as 57 degrees F.
