Three people lost their lives after a semi driver allegedly attempted an illegal U-turn on a turnpike.

According to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assisted the Florida Highway Patrol with a traffic homicide investigation following a severe accident on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday.

The incident, which occurred on the northbound side of the roadway, involved a semi-truck and trailer that jackknifed.

WPTV, citing the Florida Highway Patrol, reported that the semi, from the right-hand lane, attempted a U-turn through an “official use only” passage and crossed in front of the van in the left lane.

The driver of the van was unable to stop in time and struck the trailer, WPTV reported.

According to the station, the collision resulted in the deaths of two passengers, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, Florida and a 54-year-old man from Miami, Florida. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Florida City, was flown to an area hospital, where he later died, according to the station’s report.

“When you hold a commercial license, you’re considered a professional driver, and you should know better,” a licensed truck driver with 25 years of experience said when speaking to reporters with WPTV.

The two men inside the semi involved were reportedly injured in the crash, WPTV reported. No further information has been released by authorities as of Friday.
