Two people were detained after a violent crash in Miami that the sheriff’s office said was caused by a vehicle that sped away from a traffic stop on Wednesday.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) said their Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) had attempted to stop a vehicle on Northwest 56th Street and Northwest 27th Avenue.
Detectives lost sight of the car “as it sped away driving recklessly,” and moments later, they said it crashed at the intersection of Northwest 22nd Avenue and Northwest 26th Street.
Miami Fire Rescue said it responded to the collision at 7:30 p.m. and found one of the cars rolled over with multiple people trapped inside. Two other vehicles were also involved, MDSO said.
First responders with the Miami Technical Rescue Team worked to extricate the victims with hydraulic cutting tools known as the jaws of life.
A total of four people were rushed to Ryder Trauma Center, and a fifth was evaluated at the scene.
One woman was in critical condition. The other three were in serious but stable condition, including a pregnant woman, Miami Fire Rescue said.
Two subjects were detained, the sheriff’s office said, and the investigation is ongoing.
