9-year-old survives after freak accident sends arrow through his brain: ‘It’s a miracle’

Source: CNN Newsource

The parents of a 9-year-old Minnesota boy say it’s a miracle their son survived falling face-first onto an arrow when he slipped on some ice in their driveway.
Gus Deterding, 9, was helping pack his dad’s truck for a hunting trip in March when he slipped on some ice on the driveway. He was carrying a lot of stuff at the time, including a youth bow and arrow. When Gus fell, that arrow entered his head just beside his nose.
“He fell right on it [the arrow],” said Gus’ mother, Abby Deterding. “I was vacuuming downstairs… and he came in in a panic, lots of blood.”
Gus had pulled the arrow out of his head on his own while still in the driveway. By the time he reached his parents, he was bleeding but only seemed to have a very small cut.
The family drove to the hospital, where a cautious emergency room doctor sent Gus by helicopter to Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. No one knew how far the arrow had penetrated the 9-year-old’s head, and after a few hours of observation, doctors sent him home.
When Gus started vomiting, his parents brought him back to the hospital, and head scans were taken. They showed something no one could believe: the arrow had gone through the middle of Gus’ brain and come within just 2 centimeters of exiting his skull.
