A Brightline train struck and killed a pedestrian as it pulled into the Aventura station on July 24.
The collision happened at about 1:06 p.m. as the train approached the platform. One passenger said the train sounded its horn before running over the individual at 195 Street and Biscayne Boulevard.
Aventura Police said one lane of traffic is closed as officers investigate.
Accounts of the incident differed. A Brightline employee who did not witness the impact said the person appeared to be trying to cross the tracks. Another employee who saw the collision described it as an apparent suicide. A third staffer was led away in tears.
Authorities have not released the identity of the victim or said whether the death was accidental or intentional. Neither Brightline nor Aventura Police immediately responded to requests for more information.
The incident comes amid growing scrutiny of Brightline’s safety record. According to a joint investigation by the Miami Herald and its partner station, WLRN, Brightline has killed more than 180 people, marking the highest fatality rate of any railroad in the nation.
