A lawsuit seeking more than $10 million in damages has been filed against the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and several of its counselors after an 11-year-old girl was severely injured in a boating accident earlier this summer.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on July 10 during a camp swimming session when a motorized boat driven by a 21-year-old counselor struck camper Catherine Viteri, leaving her permanently disfigured.
The suit, filed in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court, accuses the sailing club of gross negligence, alleging that it allowed an inexperienced counselor to operate a powered vessel without adequate training or supervision.
Attorneys for the victim claim the club’s failures resulted in catastrophic injuries and lifelong harm. “This case represents an inexcusable breakdown in the safety and supervision of children,” said attorney Justin B. Shapiro of Leesfield & Partners. “It is unthinkable that the counselor charged with protecting this child was the one who caused such devastating injuries. The level of negligence is extraordinary.”
The lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and permanent disability.
