Two months after being critically injured in a crash during a police chase, 23-year-old Kevin Alvarez has been released from the hospital and taken into custody, Miami-Dade authorities said.
Deputies arrested Alvarez on Tuesday on multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage.
The incident occurred on September 10 near Southwest 87th Avenue and 50th Street in the Olympia Heights area. Deputies said Alvarez was initially stopped in the road when they approached his vehicle. He allegedly rammed a deputy’s car while attempting to flee. Moments later, after a supervisor called off the pursuit, Alvarez’s vehicle slammed into a tree.
Surveillance footage showed the crash and deputies rushing in to assist the injured driver. Alvarez was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Following his recovery, Alvarez was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and appeared before a judge Wednesday, where his bond was set at $30,800.
