According to a spokesperson for the Davie Police Department, a driver in Davie lost  control and wound-up crashing into a canal, and the frightening moment was recorded on  video. Police  said the driver was suffering from a medical episode at the time of the crash. Apparently,  the victim was suffering from low blood sugar. Steps to Take After Car Accident in South Florida

Obtain Medical Treatment: Unless you die at the scene of an accident the only way to  receive a fair settlement or judgment is to seek medical treatment for your physical, emotional, and mental injuries. There is simply no way around this fact. If you’re not willing  to get treatment, you can’t expect to get a fair settlement plain and simple. Regardless of  whether you were treated at the scene or in a hospital setting immediately following your  accident, your lawyer is going to want you to visit a medical professional with specific  experience with accident victims. Take their advice.

Take Photos: As soon as possible you should return to the scene of the incident and  take photos from your point of view and from the points of view of the other drivers or  involved parties. Take several photos of the entire scene from various angles. Photograph  damages caused to trees, guardrails, or signs. If there are any skid marks or other marks  take pictures of them and walk them off to estimate their length and include this  information in your letter. Take pictures of all relevant traffic signs and signals. If you have  any physical injuries, you should photograph them. Photograph your injuries throughout  your recovery and after your treatment and/or surgeries. Pictures of swelling, bruising,  and sutures, especially from a hospital bed, can be very helpful to your case. Don’t count  on anyone else, including your doctor, to collect the information that you’ll need to  maximize your settlement or verdict.

Keep Track of all Expenses: You should document and include evidence of all additional  costs you incur because of your accident in your letter. In addition to medical bills, you  should save evidence of costs associated with services necessitated by your accident.  Perhaps you’ve had to hire someone to drive your children to school or someone to mow  your lawn. Keep track of all these added costs due to your injury.

Contact Your Insurance Company: Most insurers require that you contact them  immediately following an accident. Many policies include language that requires you to  contact them, as soon as practicable but a good rule of thumb is to contact your insurance  company within 24 hours of an accident.

Don’t talk to the other driver’s insurance company: It is very likely that you’ll be  contacted by the other driver’s insurer regardless of who was at fault for the accident. In  our experience it almost never makes sense to talk to them. If there is any potential that  any party to the accident might file a personal injury claim it is very important not to  discuss the accident. You should always leave all communication to your lawyer or your  insurance company’s adjuster. Remember, the goal of the other driver’s insurance  company is to pay you less. Don’t help them.

Stay off Social Media: Most Americans use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter,  and Pinterest. In fact, more than 50% of accident victims share details and photos of their  incidents on social media. As a result, there are countless stories of lawyers and  insurance companies using social media posts against accident victims. Remember,  everything you post on social media after an automobile accident can be used against  you. My advice? Do not post anything about your accident on social media.
