The family of a Surfside man who was killed by a Miami-Dade County bus is now suing the county, demanding changes to prevent another tragedy.
It happened on November 8, 2024, at a busy intersection in South Beach, where surveillance footage shows 69-year-old James Corpora getting out of his parked SUV at the corner of 13th Street and Washington Avenue, just feet in front of a bus stop.
Moments later, a Miami-Dade Transit bus attempted to pull into the stop. Within two minutes, Corpora was crushed to death between his SUV and the moving bus. The graphic details of the incident were captured on camera but are too disturbing to show.
A crash report diagram obtained by NBC6 confirms Corpora was legally parked at the time of the incident.
Since the fatal crash, one visible change has been made; the street parking lines near the bus stop where Corpora had parked are now painted over.
The lawsuit not only seeks accountability for the Corpora family but also raises broader questions about the safety of bus stop designs across Miami-Dade County.
