Motorcycle Accident Injuries

In the United States, there is a great number of people who enjoy riding motorcycles. However, what is commonly forgotten is the fact that motorcycles don’t offer a whole lot of protection for riders. For most riders, the best thing to do is to just throw on some safety gear and try to be as safe as possible. But the problem is that motorcycle accidents can result in serious injuries for riders. That is why it is important to get a better understanding of the many types of injuries riders can sustain in motorcycle accidents. Injuries that commonly arise out of motorcycle crashes can range from relatively minor to fatal. In most cases, a motorcycle crash occurs when a rider collides with some other object on the roadway or another vehicle on the roadway. A motorcyclist involved in a motorcycle accident might incur any one or more of the following types of injuries:

Soft tissue injury: A soft tissue injury is usually an injury that cannot be perceived on any type of independent test such as an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI. Soft tissue injuries usually involve a sprain, strain, or torn ligaments. In some cases, soft tissue injuries can heal with time but in some instances, it can leave an injured victim with a permanent injury.

Neck and Back Injury: A neck and back injury usually involves some type of injury to the spinal column. It can range from a situation where an injured victim may feel inflammation or in more severe injuries, the victim may feel pinched nerves which is far more painful.

Road Rash: Road rash occurs when an abrasion forms on the skin after coming into contact with an abrasive surface like a roadway or street. While relatively minor, this injury can affect multiple layers of skin depending upon the accident. In some cases, an injured victim may develop scarring that is permanent.

Broken Bones and Broken Joints: Motorcycle accidents commonly lead to broken or fractured arms, legs, elbows, hips, knees, shoulders, etc. The injuries can range from simple hairline fractures to compound fractures and paralysis. Some accidents result in the severing of a body part at the scene of the accident or may result in an amputation at the hospital due to the doctor’s inability to save the affected body part.

Traumatic Brain Injury (“TBI”): These are the most serious types of injuries a motorcyclist can sustain in a motorcycle accident. In the minor injury cases, an injured victim may suffer a small concussion which may get better with time. In more serious cases, an injured victim may enter a coma or sustain permanent damage to their brain.

Spinal Cord Injury: A spinal cord injury can be extremely damaging and can take a long time to heal properly. Spinal cord injuries can result in a broken back or fractured spine; a herniation or compression injury; loss of bladder or bowel control; paralysis; paraplegia; quadriplegia; or even death.

Disfigurement: Due to the serious nature of certain injuries motorcyclists can be left with permanent injuries, ugly and disfiguring scars as well as disfiguring injuries that can result in lifelong psychological consequences that, in certain cases, may require cosmetic or reconstructive surgery.
