Motorcycle Accidents in South Florida
When compared to accidents involving sedans, trucks, and SUVs, accidents involving motorcycles often result in a greater number of serious injuries and fatalities. Unfortunately, when the negligence of another driver causes a motorcycle accident, the rider of the motorcycle almost always suffers the consequences. While there are multiple contributing factors, there are about 3 main factors responsible for riders being at such a high risk of being involved in a motorcycle accident. The first factor is that motorcycles provide very little protection for operators and passengers when compared to sedans, trucks, and SUVs. As such, motorcycle accidents often result in fatal injuries. In fact, even non-fatal injuries responsible for hospitalizations of motorcyclists are usually severe and require inpatient or outpatient hospital care and treatment. Second, motorcycles are simply much smaller in size than the different types of motor vehicles they share the roadways with. Due to this size difference, we often hear drivers complain that motorcycles are easily hidden behind other vehicles and catch many drivers by surprise which often leads to car vs motorcycle accidents. The third factor pertains to driving hazards and dangerous road conditions which frequently cause motorcycle accidents. Some examples of road hazards are things like potholes, debris left on the road, construction equipment, barriers, etc. While these conditions may not cause a typical car accident, when experienced by a motorcycle rider they can cause the operator to lose control and fall or collide with another vehicle. Overall, it is important to understand the factors most commonly associated with motorcycle crashes and consider what steps to take to reduce the likelihood of being involved in a motorcycle accident. If you would like to prevent getting into a motorcycle accident, it is important to follow certain steps. For starters, always make sure that when you are operating your motorcycle, you are always following all traffic regulations, especially the speed limit. Next, if you just purchased your first motorcycle or haven’t been on a bike in a long time, take the time to make sure you get some proper training before heading out. Finally, consider purchasing protective clothing and equipment. For instance, consider purchasing a helmet, motorcycle jacket, eye protection and possibly some steel toe boots as it can potentially mean the difference between minor injuries and serious life-threatening injuries in the event of an accident.
