A spokesperson for the Broward County Police Department says a woman died after being struck by two vehicles early Wednesday morning around 5:30 a.m. The hit and run took place in Fort Lauderdale near State Road 7, just south of Davie Boulevard. Surveillance video from the area shows the woman being hit while walking in the northbound lanes. The first vehicle hit the woman and caused her land in the center of the roadway. The woman was then struck by a second vehicle, a Chevrolet Equinox. The driver initially left the scene but returned upon seeing what occurred on the news. She is cooperating with investigators. The Broward Sheriff’s Office said the pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead on the scene. An investigation is still ongoing.
Hit and Run Car Crashes in Miami & Broward
Every year, thousands of car crashes involving serious injuries and deaths are caused by hit and run drivers. In the United States, hit and run car crashes account for roughly 1500-2000 deaths each year. In some hit and run cases, police conduct an investigation and eventually find the responsible driver and hold them accountable. Unfortunately, the vast majority of drivers who cause hit and run car accidents are never found. When the latter occurs, many injured accident victims find themselves wondering what if anything can be done. If you or someone you love is involved in a car accident and the other driver flees the scene, you should try your best to identify the car, driver, or at least get a glimpse of their license plate number. Understandably, the distress and panic that follows an accident can make it quite difficult to focus but nevertheless, try to react quickly and get any piece of information that may assist the authorities in their investigation. Overall, any sliver of information or evidence that you can provide to the investigating officers can make a big difference in whether the driver is caught. Additionally, while the police are no doubt going to make a diligent effort to search for the driver, make it a point to stay in touch with the police to see if any new information turns up or if they have any leads. Even if the authorities are not able to find the driver who caused your accident, you can still make a claim with your auto insurance provider for any injuries you may have sustained in the accident. If you purchased uninsured motorist coverage as part of your policy, you can make a claim under the uninsured motorist coverage provision in your policy. In Florida, all liability insurance policies come with this type of coverage unless you specifically rejected the coverage in writing. When you file a claim with your insurer, they might try to deny coverage for the accident or underpay your claim early on in the claims process. Oftentimes, insurers will cite several reasons for denying or underpaying a claim. For example, some insurance companies will deny that the other driver was at fault for the accident. In other instances, insurance companies may claim that the accident did not cause your injury, or they may argue that your injury is not serious enough to qualify for compensation. Don’t fall for these common tactics! These are some of the various reasons why it is vital that you speak with a car accident lawyer who is experienced with these types of cases. A skilled attorney can negotiate with your insurance company to make sure your rights are protected.
