A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department says they are actively looking for a driver who fled the scene of the accident after hitting a 14-year-old boy who was out riding a bicycle in Bal Harbour Saturday night just after 7pm. The impact occurred at the intersection of Collins Avenue and 102 street near the Bellini Condominium building. According to Miami-Dade Police, the teen was headed west on Collins Ave when a driver struck the boy and continued to head North in a Kia sedan. A witness said the impact caused the victim’s bicycle to break into two pieces, and the teen appeared to be unresponsive. Emergency first responders airlifted the victim to the Ryder Trauma Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police said they are searching for a silver 2018 Kia Optima with damage to the front right end and windshield. Detectives have not released the victim’s identity, as they continue to investigate.
Bicycle Accidents in South Florida
Unfortunately, those who are struck by a car while riding a bicycle are far less likely to recover from their injuries than persons who are injured in an accident while riding in a car. There are many reasons for this including the fact that drivers and bicyclists can’t seem to share the road very well, drivers who speed excessively, distracted drivers, drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Overall here are some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents in South Florida:
Pull-Out Crashes: these types of accidents typically happen when a motorist pulls out of their driveway or shopping center and smashes into a cyclist pedaling down a sidewalk. These types of accidents usually occur because the cyclist doesn’t have enough time to avoid the accident as it happens rather quickly.
Rear-End Crashes: these types of accidents generally occur when a driver hits a bicyclist directly on the back wheel of their bike. Due to the nature of the crash, this usually causes a cyclist to flip over or fall off their bicycle and the injuries that result in these types of accidents can be fatal. These types of crashes usually occur at nighttime where visibility is diminished.
Right or Left Turn Crashes: these types of accidents normally will occur when a motorist is driving next to a person on a bicycle and fails to notice them before deciding to make a left or right turn onto another street or roadway. In some instances, the biker is struck on their side or is run over completely by the motorist. In other accidents, the cyclist may be struck head on as they make a turn.
