Miami-Dade police officers arrived at the scene of a severe rollover accident involving 5 vehicles near the entrance to the Turnpike at NE 88th Street and NE St. Johns road around 1pm on Monday June 22. A spokesperson for the Miami-Dade police department says that three of the occupants were hospitalized and the others sustained minor injuries. Witnesses said the accident occurred when a Ford Ranger pick-up truck collided with a Honda SUV causing the pick-up to flip over and land on its roof. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had to extricate both drivers from their vehicles and both were transported to the hospital shortly thereafter. The status of that driver’s injuries is unknown. No citations have been issued at this time, but witnesses say that one of the drivers may have failed to stop at a traffic signal. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
Rollover Car Accidents in South Florida
Car accidents that are caused by rollovers can produce very serious injuries for any driver or passenger involved. All types of vehicles can rollover. However, taller, narrower vehicles such as SUVs, pickups, and vans have higher centers of gravity, and thus are more susceptible to rollover if involved in a single-vehicle crash. Furthermore, there are many factors that can cause a vehicle to rollover including things like speed, road conditions, weather conditions, vehicle defects, distracted driving, etc. While there are multiple potential causes for rollover car accidents, as mentioned above, in most instances, rollover car accidents are caused by two main issues. The first issue pertains to drivers who lose control of their vehicle for some reason. Some examples of things that may cause a driver to lose control of their vehicle include sleepiness, being distracted by another passenger or a smartphone device to name a few. Basically, anything that diverts the driver’s attention from the road. The second issue involves drivers that are speeding at the time the accidents occur. Risky and unsafe driving is always a bad decision while driving. Drivers who drive aggressively, take sharp turns, swerve in and out of lanes at high speed are all especially at risk of being involved in a rollover accident. The worst part about rollover accidents is that these types of accidents tend to affect multiple vehicles and occupants.
