Two people from New York died early Thursday morning in a crash that shutdown the Florida Turnpike for hours.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators determined the pair were headed north in a Nissan Altima around 2 a.m. when their sedan collided with a semi near mile marker 141, in Port St. Lucie.
The crash sent the Altima into a concrete barrier before it came to a rest on the shoulder, while the tractor-trailer rolled onto its side and into the grass.
Both people in the Altima, who lived in Hauppage, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were not released pending notification of the family.
The semi driver was injured in the wreck and taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, in Fort Pierce.
During the investigation, the Turnpike was closed at the Becker Road exit.
