A startling video from San Francisco shows a transit operator apparently asleep as her train sped through a tunnel at roughly 50 mph, throwing riders to the floor and nearly colliding with a car.
The footage, recorded inside a crowded two-car Muni train, shows the operator slumped over just before the train takes a curve at high speed. Passengers can be heard screaming as the force of the turn sends several of them crashing to the ground. One woman yells, “I wanna get off!” while another shouts, “Oh my God!”
The violent jolt awakens the operator, who then scrambles to regain control and brings the train to a stop. She can be heard apologizing and repeatedly telling frightened riders to “relax” and insisting, “We didn’t crash.”
According to local reports, one woman suffered a concussion during the incident.
Transit officials later said the scare occurred in the Sunset Tunnel near Duboce Park on the morning of Sept. 4. Their investigation found no mechanical issues with the train or the tracks. Instead, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency determined the incident stemmed from “operator fatigue,” noting the train entered the curve at an unsafe speed of about 50 mph.
