Were you hurt or injured in a traffic accident in South Florida? It is crucial that you understand your ability to recover damages for your injury including compensation to pay for medical treatment, medical expenses, surgeries, loss of income, lost wages, pain, and suffering, and more. If you find yourself in a tough spot and don’t know what to do after an accident, contact us and we will be happy to discuss your options further. Here’s a few steps to take after a car accident:
Physical Assessment of Injuries: the first thing you want to do is check for any injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately and ask for an ambulance. Make sure you tell the operator that you need urgent medical assistance. When you call, try your best to give the operator detailed information on your location.
Police Report: Always complete a report with the police at the scene of the accident. If anyone involved in the accident seems to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, make sure you tell that to the police officers who arrive at the scene of the accident. If you happened to notice that the driver of the other car was using their smartphone, make sure you let police officers know.
Avoid Conflicts with Other Drivers or Passengers: if you are involved in a car accident, you do not need to ask the other drivers or passengers for their license number and insurance information. Instead, the police officers that arrive at the scene of the accident can take care of this for you. Do not apologize and do not assign blame. Anything you say may be used against you later in the claims process or in litigation if it becomes necessary in your case.
Exchange Information: after an accident, you want to obtain as much information as possible. You will need the full name, address, and phone number of everyone involved in the crash including drivers and passengers. You will also want to obtain the license plate numbers for all vehicles involved in the crash. If any drivers were not the registered owners of the vehicles that were in the accident, you will want to get the registered owners contact information.
