According to a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, a truck driver has been rescued after being trapped in his truck cabin following a crash involving multiple drivers in NW Miami-Dade. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews and Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike near Okeechobee Road at around 6am this morning. Emergency first responders worked to get the driver out of the cab of the truck. According to Florida Highway Patrol, the crash involved two other drivers. The tractor-trailer went into an embankment before overturning. Crews remained on the scene for several hours after they turned the truck right side up and were seen trying to remove its contents before towing it from the scene. There was also a black sedan and a white van with heavy damage. All north and southbound lanes of the Turnpike were shut down in the area as crews worked to help the victim. The northbound lanes have since reopened. The driver is responsive and has since been airlifted to a nearby hospital. It remains unclear how many victims are involved in the crash, but rescue crews said those who were injured have injuries that were not life-threatening. No further details have been released. Do Road Hazards Often Lead to Car Accidents?
The most common road hazards that drivers encounter is on highways and freeways. Hazards can include anything from a pothole to a sewer grate, a manhole cover, a construction cone, standing water, a parked car, or an animal carcass. Drivers are also faced with construction debris, nails, sticks, posts, and rebar. These cases involve crashes completely unrelated to motor vehicles but can also result in very serious injuries. In some of these cases, there is liability or responsibility on the part of the city with respect to the condition of the roadway. Additionally, there may be some liability assigned to the construction company that dumped the materials on the roadway. Road hazard claims are often aimed at the city for failing to properly maintain the road or leaving a large gap in a section of the road that causes an accident. Our team has handled cases where drivers encountered construction debris and crashed. In those cases, it is vital to locate the construction company that dropped the materials and submit a claim to their insurance company. Unfortunately, in some of these cases, no responsible party can be located, and the car accident victim is left with lost earnings, pain and suffering and no avenue of financial recovery for medical expenses.
