Sawgrass Expressway is Back Open After Accident That Left One Woman Dead

Traffic is back to normal on the Sawgrass Expressway in Broward after lanes were closed for hours following a deadly crash. Florida Highway Patrol responded to a rollover accident at 6:22 a.m. Monday along the southbound lanes near Atlantic Boulevard. The crash left debris scattered along the highway, a silver Hyundai on its roof in the middle of the lanes and a black Honda with heavy rear damage, according to Florida Highway Patrol. The Honda also received front damage from colliding with the guardrail. The other driver, Janice Henrietta Ryder, 37, from Coral Springs was taken to Northwest Medical Center for minor injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Types of Serious Car Accident Claims

The most common type of insurance for most individuals is automobile insurance. The insurance may be purchased for a number of reasons. Purchase of liability insurance may be required by state law, with specific minimum limits dictated by the State. People who purchase their vehicles by borrowing the money for an auto loan may also be required to purchase first party (collision and comprehensive) insurance. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist coverage may be mandated by the state, along with liability coverage, and in some states, there is a No-Fault law which requires each registered owner to purchase Personal Injury Protection coverage. Florida law requires drivers to carry PIP insurance to cover their medical costs, lost income, and other medical expenses up to a certain amount, regardless of fault for the accident. If other parties caused the car accident, you may hold their insurance company liable for any damage to your vehicle, as well as any medical expenses that exceed your PIP coverage. Most automobile accidents are of a minor nature and involve only one or two vehicles. Those types of such accidents are often handled routinely by phone, mail, Internet, and fax, with possibly the only outside investigation being an appraisal of the damages to the vehicles and are resolved in a matter of days, if not hours. However, the more serious accidents require more detailed investigation. Such accidents usually include (but are not limited to) situations such as accidents involving a fatality; multiple vehicle accidents with multiple injuries and damages; serious accidents where liability is not clear on the part of either party involved; accidents involving coverage problems, such as issues involving identity of the insured vehicle, possible exclusions, late reporting, or other coverage issues; serious accidents that may exceed policy limits or approach high limit layers; accidents involving alleged alcohol or drug usage; uninsured motorist claims involving or hit and run accidents; claims where litigation is, or may become, involved and any serious accident involving commercial vehicles.

Common Questions Your Attorney May Ask: An attorney’s role in the process is to gather all of the important facts that can play a role in the operation of the policy and the interpretation of it and try to achieve the most favorable result possible for their clients. While not necessarily the best, certainly the initial source for that information must be a thorough interview. At Suarez & Montero, we want our clients to get the sense that they are being heard. Understanding the accident begins with an understanding of how the various parties came to be where they were. Some of the most common questions an attorney may ask in this initial interview are:

• Who are the named insureds on the policy?

• Who is actually involved in the incident which has led to the question of coverage?

• Who owned the vehicle?

• Who was driving the vehicle?

• How did that person come to be driving the vehicle?

• Who was injured?

• Who was driving the other vehicle, if there was another vehicle?

• To whom was the claim reported?

• With whom of the insurance carrier have you had contact?

• Has any attorney contacted you with regard to the incident?

• Was the policyholder injured in the accident?

• Has treatment been sought for those injuries?

• What information is available concerning treatment for anyone else involved in the accident, including hospitals or doctors?

• Was either driver acting within the course or scope of employment?

• Was the vehicle involved identified as an insured vehicle on the policy?
