Do you know what steps to take after being in an accident?
Car accidents can often cause serious or catastrophic injuries or loss of life. If you are involved in a car accident, the steps you take after the accident can greatly affect the outcome of your claim or lawsuit. Here are some steps you should consider taking after you are involved in a car accident in south Florida:
Notify Your Insurance Company. Notify your insurance company within the first couple days after a car accident, you should let your insurance company know that you were involved in a car accident. Most insurance companies have specific provisions in their policies that require you to notify them in the event of an accident within a reasonable amount of time. In fact, to collect compensation under your insurance policy, you will be required to report your claim in a timely manner. It is not always obvious in the first couple days after an accident who will be responsible for damages. To protect yourself against the unexpected need to file a claim under your own policy somewhere down the road, make sure to satisfy your policy’s requirement that you give your insurance company timely notice of the accident.
Check on Your Passengers: After any crash, consider moving your car out of the roadway or street if possible. That way, you can reduce the risk of having another vehicle hit your car or the other cars involved, and it will also be easier to assess the situation more calmly. Immediately afterwards, take the time to assess the situation and see if any of your passengers or anyone for that matter needs medical attention. If you see that someone needs assistance, be careful and make sure that you don’t attempt to move the injured person without first evaluating the injury. You don’t want to aggravate the injury.
Preserve and Organize Evidence. The first couple days after a car accident can be extremely important when it comes to finding and organizing evidence of what occurred. As you proceed with your personal injury claim, you will likely find more and more documents and pieces of evidence that can support your claim. It is important to make sure that you keep all these documents and pieces of evidence organized so that you can find things easily. Moreover, it is important to keep track of your records and documents to see what can be added to your evidence to build the strongest personal injury claim possible.
