According to a spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Police Department, it was just after noon when an SUV headed northbound along US-1 pulled out from the stop sign to make a left turn onto Sunset Drive when a motorcycle, speeding eastbound on Sunset Drive slammed into the driver’s side of the SUV. The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene. The SUV driver was taken to the hospital but later passed away. The spokesperson did not provide the names of those involved. An investigation into the cause of the accident is still on going. Important Steps to Take After Being Involved in a Motorcycle Accident
- Obtain the name, address, license plate number and insurance information of the responsible party.
- Contact emergency personnel and request that the police perform a full investigation and prepare an accident report.
- Promptly seek medical attention if there is any question as to whether you’ve been injured.
- If there are witnesses in the area, try to talk to those individuals, get their contact information and make certain that the investigating officers are aware of any witnesses.
- If you are able and you have a cell phone or a camera, take photos of the scene, the involved vehicle, your bike, and your injuries.
- Keep a journal of the incident, your treatment and your limitations following the accident. As time passes and the memory of the incident fades, a clear recall of the events that caused the crash and the pain and inconveniences in the aftermath of the accident is important.
- Don’t discard your damaged motorcycle or motorcycle gear. You may be entitled to compensation for these items in addition to recovery for your bodily injuries. Your bicycle property may also be critical evidence in determining the cause of the crash, proving fault, and establishing damages.
- Your health and well-being should always be your top priority. But after you have been treated and released, do your research, and find an experienced bicycle accident attorney. He or she should be skilled in motorcycle accident law and able to speak to you about preserving your rights and protecting your interests.
- Remember that you are under no obligation to contact the other driver’s insurance company, provide any statements (other than to the investigating officers) or sign any forms until you have consulted with an experienced attorney.
